Progress? Well I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. Two weeks off, but I did not have a moment for this until this Sunday, 1 April, when I have made time for it around laundry, vacuuming, etc. I tried to do the wikki number 2 assignment but it crashed firefox and then a message came from apple that I should download a bunch of new software which I did. That took over an hour because I have only light not high-speed connection.
Moving on. Taking the crash as an omen I decided to move on to week 5, social bookmarking. I can see a very practical purpose for delicious, as I have more than one work station. Thus I can harmonize my two sets of bookmarks on my two computers, but I have to wait until work to do that. I have a limited number of booksmarks on my home computer and see no reason to change that. Flicker holds no interest to me at all; I have no need to share photos — some of my family members don’t even have a computer!!!
I’m unclear about tagging. When you bookmark, you are always given the option to re-write the tag and I always do, making a tag that means something to me. So how it this different?
I notice that some people are blogging in the blog for that week, rather than placing their comments in their own blog. This would appear to be a way to reach a wider audience as we all must read the assignment blog each week. Who, apart from the group leader, is reading the invidual blogs, I wonder?
There has been a number of newspaper articles recently which I have read (shockingly) in hard copy on Second Life, My Space, Facebook, and most importantly privacy, which the author, Ivor Tossell, says is non-existent on the web.
I could find the article on the web and provide a link to it. Perhaps I will. For the moment I will just highlight a few points. “It doesn’t matter if you’re posting under a pseudonym [as I do in this blog]. It most definitely does not matter if the page you’re using assures you it’s private or semi-private, or password-protected.” There is no privacy on the internet. Got it?
Is no one interested in privacy? Is it all social?
